When to Consider Knee replacement Surgery
Knee replacement surgery may help you
if other arthritis treatments (Medicine Physiotherapy) don't work
and you have any of the following:
You are not able to walk very long or very well
You are not able to get in or out of a chair
Your knee is bowed in or out
Moderate to severe pain even when you're resting
What is done in surgery?
Knee replacement surgery usually takes 1 to 2 hours. The surgeon removes damaged cartilage and bone from the knee joint. Then the surgeon attaches metal implants to the ends of the thigh and calf bones. Plastic spacer goes between the metal pieces and helps the new joint move smoothly.
How long to stay in Hospital ?
Most people stay in the hospital for three to four days or longer after knee replacement surgery. You will be given some pain medicine. You should try to move your knee soon after surgery. Allowed to walk around very next day after surgery. With the help of physiotherapist you can go to toilet by youself very next day after surgery. Moving around increases blood flow to the leg muscles and can help reduce swelling and pain.
Care at Home after surgery ?
When you come back home from hospital, you should be able to walk with crutches or a walker. But you may require help for bathing, cooking, and with household chores for the first 3 to 6 weeks.
Keep on Moving..........................
To make the most of your new replaced knee, you should follow your doctor's orders about being active in weeks after the surgery. Too much of rest can slow your recovery down, but you don't want to overdo it, either. Focus on moving around your house, taking walks, and doing the exercises suggested by your physiotherapist.
Physical Therapy
Physical therapy for knee replacement surgery includes exercises for flexibility and strength. You can do these exercises at a physiotherapy center or at home, but be sure to ask the physiotherapist how to do them the right way. You should keep them up as long as your doctor recommends, usually at least 3 months after surgery.
How Long takes the Recovery?
All patients recovers from surgery at their own pace. Your surgeon will tell you when it is safe to go back to your normal activities.
Household activity: 3-6 weeks
Work: 4 weeks or more- depending on your job requirements
Swimming: 6-8 weeks
Driving: Before you can drive, will need to be off pain medicine and be able to get in and out of the car. You may be able to start driving within 4 to 6 weeks, even if your driving leg was operated on.
Protecting Your Knee Implant !
You can extend the life of your knee implant by taking care of it. After surgery, use a cane or walker until your balance improves, as a fall can cause serious damage to a new joint. High-impact activity can also take a toll on knee implants, so most doctors warn against jogging, jumping, and contact sports.
Success for Knee Replacement !!
Some activities are off-limits after a knee replacement, you still have plenty of others to choose from.
Unlimited walking
Golf
Cycling
